Tap water filtration we consider one of the top things necessary for maintaining a healthy reef aquarium. So many people overlook these units, and it can have a very negative effect on water chemistry in general. RO/DI units stand for Reverse Osmosis Deionization. There are so many things in regular tap water that can absolutely destroy a reef aquarium. Fluoride, heavy metals, and other chemical contaminants get into the water and in nature these aren't things that corals, fish, and clams generally run into. These are one of those things where you spend the money and save yourself a ton in the future because excessive build-up of these things in a tank can lead to a lot of costly issues with both livestock and equipment.
All RO/DI units comes in a range of sizes. The higher the GPD rating means the more the water will put out in general. Just do you're not driving yourself nuts waiting for water we recommend that your GPD marker is set for at least your aquarium size (or around there). If you have a 180 gallon aquarium you should get a 200 GPD unit. If you have a 300 gallon aquarium then get yourself a 300 GPD unit. This can also help in the even that for any reason you should need to an urgent water change.
